Mandy Hodson has been a school counselor since 2008 and has a background in both high school and middle school counseling, as well as teaching English Language Arts. She is thrilled to be working with students at Drake Middle School. Mandy will be helping students achieve their academic and personal goals, as well as start working with students early on for career and college plans.

Mandy is originally from the East Coast and earned a bachelor’s degree in English Education from Frostburg State University in Western Maryland. After several years of teaching, Mandy decided to continue working with students in an educational setting but different capacity and pursue a master’s degree in School Counseling.

Mandy lives in Arvada with her husband, Kevin, and 3 kids: Grace, Maggie and Charlie. For fun, Mandy and her family enjoy spending time outside in the beautiful Colorado mountains!

She then earned her master’s degree in Counseling Psychology and Counselor Education from the University of Colorado Denver.

Dena Kneisl

Picture of Dena

Dena grew up in Jeffco, graduated from Colorado State University and is excited to be back in Colorado after living all over the country including Hawaii, Florida, Chicago, Pittsburgh and Arkansas. After working in Public Relations and then staying home to raise three kiddos, Dena decided it is never too late to decide what to do when you grow up! She recently worked as a Jeffco substitute while earning her Master’s in School Counseling from Capella University and is thrilled to be at Drake Middle School.

Dena strives to help students overcome challenges and recognize their strengths in order to build positive relationships and thrive in school and in life.

Dena and her family (including Kona the best dog ever!) live in Arvada and love to travel as well as do all things Colorado including hiking, biking and cheering for the Broncos!

 Kari Gray

Picture of Kari

Social Emotional Learning Specialist

Kari is a social worker and the Social Emotional Learning Specialist (SEL for short) at Drake. While she wears many hats, her primary focus in the SEL role is to support Drake’s healthy climate and culture. You may see Kari working through the Random Acts of Kindness curriculum, Restorative Practices, or Sources of Strength among other mental health supports. Her intention is to help all in our community reach their goals and overall mental wellness.

Kari recently graduated from the Graduate School of Social Work at the University of Denver with a Masters in Social Work (MSW), school social work certificate, and a focus on family systems. Prior to her time in Denver she received her Master’s in Education and taught in Chicago Public Schools; through work in residential settings and schools, she has been involved with people across the lifespan. Middle school is a great match for her passions, education, work history, and quirky personality.

When not at Drake, Kari enjoys bouldering, skiing, hiking, spending time with her dog, Ninja, friends and family. If you talk with her long enough, eventually she’ll recommend a podcast or 12.

You can follow her on Instagram @sel_by_gray and our Sources of Strength class @sources.of.strength.drake
